Legalize Hemp essays The marijuana plant and the hemp plant are both from the cannabis family but they serve completely different purposes. The marijuana plant is grown for the buds they produce which carry the psychoactive ingredient, delta-9-tetrahydrocannibinol, aka, THC, which is what causes people to catch a buzz. The hemp plant is grown for the fibers they produce and it contains no more than 1% THC, meaning that to catch a buzz from the hemp plant, you would have to smoke 10-12 hemp joints in less than 10 minutes...highly unlikely and probably impossible. The two plants have little in common, other than the fact that they are from the same family, they look and smell alike and they are both illegal to grow. Unlike marijuana, you are allowed to possess hemp, so dont worry...you arent in the presence of an illegal substance!!! (Point to visuals) Most hemp, which you can purchase at art supply stores, has been imported from Canada, England, Australia or one of the 30 other countries where growing h emp is an extremely profitable industry. Hawaii is the only US state that has permission to grow and harvest the plant. The government granted them a quarter acre lot to test the crop for beneficial purposes. NORML stands for the National Organization for the Reform of the Marijuana Laws but this organization has just as much information on the hemp crop as it does marijuana.
